Uni Fees-What a Mess
Scotland
has set the fees for UK and EU students at a maximum of £36,000
for a four year degree. Other Universities have capped the 4 year
degree at £27,000. The Scottish government put the estimated
average annual fee at £6,841
The NUS says Scotland is set to become the most expensive place in
the UK to study for UK and EU students, with charges in some places
of up to £36,000, compared with £27,000 in England, the
reason being is that many degrees offered north of the border take
four years to complete not three.
Scottish students residing in Scotland will not have to pay the fees.
Fees only apply to students from other parts of the UK and the EU.
Students from anywhere else in the world but the UK and the EU will
have their fees paid by the Scottish government.
The Scottish government is seeking an end to rules where it has to
pay the fees of students living in non UK or EU countries, which it
says is costing the taxpayer £75m a year.
The legality of the fees plan has been questioned by the Scottish
Conservatives and suggested it could stir up resentment in the rest
of the UK against Scotland.
At the Conservative party conference in Manchester, George Osborne
said, “halfway through the financial year, it was apparent Whitehall
departments were going to spend "a little way short" of
the £350bn expected”.
"This is often the case but sometimes governments have just sat
on that money because it hasn't mattered so much. I think at times
like this if we've got anything spare, we should spend it." Scotland
will get an extra £67.5m in its block grant but ministers are
still undecided how to spend it. The SNP had already pledged to freeze
council tax for five years before the extra £67bn was announced.
In Manchester it was suggested that had the ConDems not increased
the overseas aid
budget by £3bn, the ConDems would not have had to increase
UK tuition fees. The ConDems in their infinite wisdom, decided
to inflict hardship on its own citizens to enable overseas dictators
to buy yachts or planes with tax payers money.
