Smart Phone Apps Scams.
There
have been many warnings over these, but this scam is difficult to
detect until it is too late. This particular scam is rather nasty,
as it can cost you hundreds if not thousands of pounds, and if you
use your bank account via your smart phone, you might find your bank
account has been compromised.
The Malware apps can be downloaded as security ware, or additions
to apps already available, it is thought that some of these are also
available on genuine download sites, as well as look alike sites.
Once installed on your phone any or all of the following is available
to the fraudsters.
• Make calls to their premium numbers.
• Continuously send texts to the fraudster premium text numbers.
• Intercept your messages.
• Access your personal data.
• Access payment data on your phone.
• Access and send texts to all your contacts recommending this
app.
The recommendation
by the UK National Security Awareness Campaign is to
• Check reviews and ratings as well as developer information
before downloading a new app.
• Keep an eye on your battery – if your battery suddenly
starts draining really fast, consider that it might be a malware problem.
• Regularly check your phone bill online to keep tabs on any
suspicious activity.
If you synchronise
your phone with your laptop or computer, there is a good chance you
will also infect your laptop or computer.
